Things don't always work out the way you imagined they would - A Poem
#28
Things don't always work out the way you imagined they would.
In my mind I had fireworks.
I got a sparkler that wouldn't light.
I had imagined thunderstorms.
But my neighbour just turned on his bathroom light.
In my mind I had shooting stars.
I got one ambling satellite.
I had imagined the aurora borealis!
What I saw was a search light.
I had a picture of Picasso meets Van Gogh.
I got a handprint taped to the fridge door.
I imagined a castle in the tree tops
But it was only like an inch from the floor.
In my mind I had a modern classic.
I got badly written fan fiction.
I had imagined the greatest adventures, big and small!
... I got grounded...
So I sat alone and I closed my eyes.
The days turned to weeks, to months at a time.
But then, when I wasn't even looking,
I got roller coasters and stage dives,
Bungee jumps and scuba dives.
I got the rainbow colours of the ocean.
I got the pricks of light in the deep night sky.
I go that beautiful post-rainfall smell,
The picture perfect sunrise,
The sound of children playing in the street,
The warmth and comfort of home.
I got a dog trained to close the door behind him,
Fortune growing on trees,
Christmas dinner on halloween,
Pudding before breakfast,
Soft towels freshly cleaned.
I got the snow and the sun.
I got the eagle and the dove.
When I wasn't even looking, I got love.
Because things don't always work out the way you imagined they would.
